Am Telefon
Saying who you are, why you are calling, and what to do when you cannot hear.
A German phone call has a fixed opening. You give your name — often just the surname — and then say why you are calling. Guessing your way in politely is much harder than learning the two sentences.
Guten Tag, hier spricht Anna Berger.
Hello, this is Anna Berger speaking.
hier spricht …, never "ich bin"
Ich rufe wegen des Termins am Montag an.
I am calling about Monday’s appointment.
wegen + genitive, from Lesson 10
Könnte ich bitte Frau Keller sprechen?
Could I speak to Ms Keller, please?
Kann ich ihr etwas ausrichten?
Can I pass on a message to her?
what you will be asked
Ich rufe später noch einmal an.
I will call again later.
anrufen is separable and takes an accusative object — Ich rufe dich an. There is no "at" and no "to": never ich rufe zu dir an.
On the phone you will understand less than face to face, so the repair phrases matter more. Use them early, before the misunderstanding grows.
Entschuldigung, ich habe Sie nicht verstanden.
Sorry, I did not understand you.
Die Verbindung ist schlecht.
The line is bad.
Könnten Sie das bitte buchstabieren?
Could you spell that, please?
for names and street names
Ich wiederhole: Donnerstag um halb elf.
Let me repeat: Thursday at half past ten.
always read the time back
Ich bin Anna Berger.Hier spricht Anna Berger.
On the telephone German says hier spricht or simply the surname. Ich bin … sounds like an introduction in person.
