Lesson 5 · als or wenn

Als ich klein war

als for a single past event, wenn for habits, conditions and the future.

Not started

Lesson 16 said that German distinguishes wenn from als, and that als could wait. It has waited long enough — and now that you have war, hatte and konnte, it is straightforward.

als = one specific occasion in the past. wenn = everything else: repeated situations, the present, the future, conditions.

English uses when for both, which is exactly why this needs practice. Say the sentence to yourself and ask: did this happen once, in the past? If yes, it is als.

  • Als ich klein war, spielte ich viel.

When I was little, I played a lot.

one stretch of the past, finished → als

  • Als ich gestern nach Hause kam, war ich müde.

When I got home yesterday, I was tired.

    one occasion, yesterday → als

  • Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee.

When I am tired, I drink coffee.

    every time — a habit → wenn

  • Wenn ich Zeit habe, spiele ich Videospiele.

When I have time, I play video games.

    a condition → wenn

  • Wenn ich früher müde war, ging ich schlafen.

When I used to get tired, I went to sleep.

past, but repeated → still wenn

That last one is the case worth noticing. A sentence can be in the past and still take wenn — because what decides is not the tense but whether it happened once or again and again. Als ich in Berlin war (that one year) against Wenn ich in Berlin war (every time I visited).

Past + once → als. Past + repeatedly → wenn. Present or future → always wenn.

Structurally there is nothing new at all. als behaves exactly like wenn: verb to the end of its own clause, and if the clause comes first, the main verb follows immediately after the comma.

  • Als ich klein war, wohnte ich in Marokko.

When I was little, I lived in Morocco.

verb, comma, verb — the familiar shape

  • Ich war müde, als ich nach Hause kam.

I was tired when I got home.

    same sentence, clause second

  • Als ich das Haus verlassen habe, hat es geregnet.

When I left the house, it was raining.

als works with the Perfekt too — it is about the event, not the tense

One practical note. With ordinary verbs you can use either the Perfekt or the Präteritum after als — als ich nach Hause kam and als ich nach Hause gekommen bin are both heard. With sein, haben and the modals, stick to the Präteritum: als ich klein war, never als ich klein gewesen bin*.

For biography this pairing is everything: Als ich 18 war, …, Als ich in Deutschland ankam, …, Wenn ich Zeit hatte, …. Between them they cover most of what you will ever say about your own past.

Wenn ich klein war, spielte ich viel.Als ich klein war, spielte ich viel.

Childhood is one single stretch of the past, so it takes als. (With wenn it would mean "whenever I was small", which is nonsense.)

Als ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee.Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee.

als is past-only. A present-tense habit is always wenn.
