Lesson 10 · Noun plus light verb

Funktionsverbgefüge

High-value formal collocations, what they mean, and the plain verb behind each one.

Not started

Formal German often replaces one verb with a noun plus a nearly empty verb. entscheiden becomes eine Entscheidung treffen. The meaning barely changes; the register changes completely.

The verb is not chosen by logic. You treffen a decision, üben criticism and ziehen something in Betracht — learn each pairing as one word.

ExpressionMeaningPlain verb
eine Entscheidung treffento take a decisionentscheiden
Kritik üben (an + Dat)to criticisekritisieren
Maßnahmen ergreifento take measures—
in Betracht ziehento considererwägen
in Frage kommento be an option—
zur Verfügung stehento be available—
zur Verfügung stellento make availablebereitstellen
Einfluss haben auf (+ Akk)to influencebeeinflussen
eine Rolle spielento matter, to play a part—
einen Beitrag leisten (zu + Dat)to contributebeitragen
Verantwortung übernehmen (für + Akk)to take responsibility—
  • Der Vorstand hat gestern eine Entscheidung getroffen.

The board took a decision yesterday.

= hat entschieden, in the register of minutes

  • Mehrere Fachleute üben Kritik an dem Verfahren.

Several experts are criticising the procedure.

    Kritik üben an + Dativ

  • Diese Möglichkeit kommt für uns nicht in Frage.

That option is out of the question for us.

  • Die Räume stehen ab Montag zur Verfügung.

The rooms are available from Monday.

stehen = are available; stellen = make available

  • Der Preis spielt dabei eine untergeordnete Rolle.

Price plays a minor part in this.

the adjective goes inside the expression

Two pairs are worth separating carefully. zur Verfügung stehen means something is available; zur Verfügung stellen means somebody makes it available. And in Frage kommen ("be a realistic option") is not the same as in Frage stellen ("call into question").

Several of these carry a fixed preposition too, and it has to be learned with them: Kritik üben an + Dativ, Einfluss haben auf + Akkusativ, einen Beitrag leisten zu + Dativ, Verantwortung übernehmen für + Akkusativ.

Use them where the register calls for it — a report, minutes, a formal letter. In conversation the plain verb is better German, not worse.

Ich habe gestern eine Entscheidung gemacht.Ich habe gestern eine Entscheidung getroffen.

machen is the English speaker’s reflex and is wrong here. The verb in a Funktionsverbgefüge is fixed.
