Reading figures

Survey tables read for trend, comparison and — above all — for what they do not show.

Not started

A table is a source like any other, and the same discipline applies: answer from what is in front of you, not from what you expect.

  • Der Anteil ist von 38 auf 21 Prozent gesunken.

The share fell from 38 to 21 per cent.

von … auf … — the two standard prepositions for a change

  • Im Vergleich zu 2021 hat sich der Wert fast verdoppelt.

Compared with 2021 the figure has nearly doubled.

  • Die Zahl ist geringfügig zurückgegangen.

    The number has declined slightly.

  • Demnach ist der Bedarf gestiegen.

Going by that, demand has risen.

a conclusion read off the figures — say so, do not assert it

A share rising does not mean the total rose. Percentages describe a distribution, not an amount.

Der Anteil der Radfahrer ist gestiegen, also fahren mehr Menschen Rad.Der Anteil ist gestiegen. Wie viele Menschen das sind, sagt die Tabelle nicht.

This is the commonest mistake in data questions, and exam items are written to catch it.
