The months are close enough to English to read at once, and the three to watch are Januar, Juni/Juli (said carefully on the phone, because they sound alike) and Oktober.

A date needs am and an ordinal: am ersten Mai, am vierzehnten Oktober. Written down it is just a full stop: am 1. Mai, am 14. Oktober.

My birthday is on the 12th of June.

German has a birthday. Using sein here is one of the most audible beginner mistakes.
