Café and shopping
Ordering, asking prices, and buying without pointing.
No new grammar here — everything below is built from what you already have. What is new is the situation, and knowing which handful of sentences carries most of the weight.
In a café, two openings do almost all the work. Ich hätte gern … is the polite standard; Ich möchte … is equally fine and slightly plainer. Both take an accusative object.
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
I would like a coffee.
Ich möchte einen großen Kaffee, bitte.
I would like a large coffee, please.
Noch einen Kaffee, bitte.
Another coffee, please.
Was kostet das?
What does that cost?
Die Rechnung, bitte.
The bill, please.
Zusammen oder getrennt?
Together or separately?
you will be asked this
Shopping runs on a similar handful. Note that Haben Sie …? takes the accusative, and Ich suche … does too.
Wie viel kostet das?
How much does that cost?
Haben Sie Kaffee?
Do you have coffee?
Ich suche eine Jacke.
I am looking for a jacket.
Das ist zu teuer.
That is too expensive.
Ich nehme das.
I will take it.
Prices are spoken with Euro in the middle: 3,50 € is drei Euro fünfzig. The comma is the decimal separator in German, so you will see 2,50 € rather than 2.50.
| written | spoken | meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 2,50 € | zwei Euro fünfzig | two fifty |
| 10 € | zehn Euro | ten euros |
| 0,99 € | neunundneunzig Cent | 99 cents |
| ein Kilo | ein Kilo | a kilo |
zu before an adjective means too — zu teuer, zu klein, zu heiß. Do not confuse it with the preposition zu you already use for destinations.
Ich will einen Kaffee.Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
Ich will is grammatically fine and socially blunt — it lands like "I want a coffee" barked at a stranger. Use hätte gern or möchte.
