Beim Arzt
Saying how long it has been going on, what you have already tried, and getting signed off.
At A1 you learned to say what hurts. The first thing a German doctor asks is seit wann — since when. The answer takes seit with the dative, and the verb stays in the present, even though English uses a perfect.
Ich habe seit drei Tagen Halsschmerzen.
I have had a sore throat for three days.
present tense in German
Seit gestern habe ich auch Fieber.
Since yesterday I have had a temperature too.
Es ist langsam besser geworden.
It has slowly got better.
Ich habe schon Tabletten genommen, aber sie haben nicht geholfen.
I have already taken tablets, but they did not help.
what you have already tried
seit + dative + present tense. Seit einer Woche, seit drei Tagen, seit dem Wochenende — never a past tense with seit.
The practical business of being ill in Germany runs on two words. Die Krankmeldung (or Krankschreibung) is the note from the doctor; sich krankmelden is what you do with your employer, by phone or email, on the first morning.
Können Sie mich bitte krankschreiben?
Could you sign me off sick, please?
Ich muss mich heute krankmelden.
I have to call in sick today.
Wie oft soll ich die Tabletten nehmen?
How often should I take the tablets?
ask — do not guess
Könnten Sie mir ein Rezept geben?
Could you give me a prescription?
Ich bin seit drei Tagen krank gewesen.Ich bin seit drei Tagen krank.
With seit, German stays in the present. The illness is still going on, so the present tense is the honest one.
