Everything so far

No new grammar here. The point of this unit is combination: almost every sentence below needs at least two things to be right at the same time, which is where A2 actually lives.

Before you write, run the four checks: which past tense · which case · where the verb goes · polite or plain.

• Als ich in Berlin war, hatte ich einen guten Job.

  When I was in Berlin, I had a good job.

  als + Präteritum + ein-word ending

• Das ist der Kollege, mit dem ich gestern gesprochen habe.

  That is the colleague I spoke to yesterday.

• Ich würde gern eine Wohnung finden, die günstig ist.

  I would like to find a flat that is cheap.

  würde + relative clause

• Könnten Sie mir eine Wohnung empfehlen, die ruhig ist?

  Could you recommend me a flat that is quiet?

The second example is there on purpose. mit dem is a dative relative pronoun — you do not have to produce it yet, but you will hear it constantly, so it is worth recognising now.
