Plans and asking for help
Making arrangements, declining politely, and getting unstuck.
Arranging to meet someone is mostly modal verbs and time expressions — both of which you already have.
Haben Sie morgen Zeit?
Do you have time tomorrow?
Passt Ihnen zehn Uhr?
Does ten o’clock suit you?
passen + dative
Können wir uns am Freitag treffen?
Can we meet on Friday?
reflexive, and the modal keeps treffen at the end
Leider kann ich nicht.
Unfortunately I cannot.
Passt mir gut.
That works for me.
Leider is the single most useful word for declining. Starting with it takes position 1, so the verb follows immediately: Leider kann ich nicht.
And when the German runs out, these are the sentences that rescue the conversation. They are worth knowing cold, because you will need them at exactly the moment you can least improvise.
Können Sie mir helfen?
Can you help me?
helfen takes the dative — mir
Ich verstehe das nicht.
I do not understand.
Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?
Could you repeat that, please?
Sprechen Sie Englisch?
Do you speak English?
Können Sie langsamer sprechen?
Could you speak more slowly?
Wie sagt man das auf Deutsch?
How do you say that in German?
helfen takes the dative: Können Sie mir helfen? — never mich. Same for Das passt mir.
Können Sie mich helfen?Können Sie mir helfen?
A small group of verbs — helfen, danken, passen, gefallen — take a dative object where English expects a direct one.
