Listening · Understanding spoken German

Announcements and messages

Short spoken items you meet in real life: a platform announcement, a voicemail, a message at work.

Not started

Real spoken German rarely gives you the sentence you expected. Announcements and voicemails are fast, and they bury the one fact you need in the middle.

Decide what you need before you listen: a time, a platform, a reason, or an action. Then listen for that and let the rest go past.

Three things are almost always the point of a spoken message:

  • Der Zug fährt heute von Gleis 7 ab.

    the changed detail

    the number is the message

  • Der Grund dafür ist eine Störung.

    the reason

listen for weil, wegen, der Grund, deshalb

  • Rufen Sie mich bitte zurück.

what you are being asked to do

the intention — usually the last sentence

Trying to catch every word and losing the thread.Letting unknown words pass and holding on to the fact you came for.

You can replay these as often as you like. A real announcement plays once — that is the skill being built.
