Listening · Understanding spoken German

Spoken stories and explanations

Longer spoken passages — something that went wrong, someone explaining why they think what they think.

A spoken story is held together by the same connectors you now use yourself: zuerst, dann, nachdem, deshalb, trotzdem. Hearing them is what lets you follow a minute of German without understanding every word.

Follow the connectors, not the vocabulary. They tell you the order and the logic, which is what the questions ask about.

One thing to listen for specifically: nachdem plus a Plusquamperfekt tells you an event happened earlier than the one in the main clause, even though both are in the past.

  • Nachdem ich angerufen hatte, wurde alles einfacher.

the call came first, then things got easier

    hatte marks the earlier event

  • Trotzdem war ich zufrieden.

    despite everything just said

trotzdem often carries the speaker’s real opinion

Answering from the first thing you recognise.Waiting for the end — spoken German often puts the point last.

The verb, the negation and the conclusion all like to arrive at the end of the sentence.
