Lesson 3 · Saying what you think

Opinions and arguments

Stating a view, supporting it, weighing two sides, and the word order deshalb and trotzdem force.

Not started

An opinion at B1 is never one sentence. It is a claim, a reason, and usually an acknowledgement that the other side exists.

OpeningRegisterWhat follows
Ich denke, dass …neutralverb at the end
Ich glaube, dass …neutral, slightly softerverb at the end
Ich finde, dass …personal reactionverb at the end
Meiner Meinung nach …a little more formalverb straight after — position 2
Für mich …casualverb straight after — position 2

Meiner Meinung nach is a phrase in position 1, not a conjunction. The verb comes next: Meiner Meinung nach ist …

  • Ich denke, dass Homeoffice praktisch ist.

I think that working from home is practical.

dass sends ist to the end

  • Meiner Meinung nach ist Homeoffice praktisch, weil man Zeit spart.

In my opinion working from home is practical, because you save time.

verb second after the opening phrase, then a weil-clause

To weigh something up, German has a ready-made pair of nouns and a ready-made pair of adverbs.

  • Der Vorteil ist, dass man flexibel arbeiten kann.

The advantage is that you can work flexibly.

  • Der Nachteil ist, dass man die Kollegen selten sieht.

The disadvantage is that you rarely see your colleagues.

  • Einerseits ist die Wohnung günstig, andererseits ist sie sehr klein.

On the one hand the flat is cheap, on the other hand it is very small.

both halves take the verb second

Now the word order that separates a B1 learner from an A2 one. deshalb, deswegen, daher all mean "that is why". They are adverbs, so they sit in position 1 and the verb follows immediately.

weil + reason → verb at the end. deshalb + result → verb straight after. Same idea, opposite machinery.

With weil (the reason)With deshalb (the result)
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil es regnet.Es regnet, deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.
Er kam nicht, weil er krank war.Er war krank, deshalb kam er nicht.

trotzdem works the same way mechanically but means the opposite: "and yet". It marks a result you would not have expected.

  • Es hat geregnet. Trotzdem sind wir spazieren gegangen.

It rained. We went for a walk anyway.

trotzdem in position 1 → sind in position 2

  • Die Wohnung ist teuer. Trotzdem nehmen wir sie.

The flat is expensive. We are taking it anyway.

Meiner Meinung nach Homeoffice ist praktisch.Meiner Meinung nach ist Homeoffice praktisch.

The opening phrase occupies position 1, so the verb must be next. This is the single most common B1 slip.

Es hat geregnet, trotzdem wir sind spazieren gegangen.Es hat geregnet, trotzdem sind wir spazieren gegangen.

trotzdem is not a conjunction like weil. Verb straight after it.
