Lesson 5 · Verbs and their prepositions

Prepositional objects

Learning the verb and its preposition as one chunk, and replacing the object with darauf, davon, womit.

Not started

A German verb often comes welded to a preposition, and the preposition is not translatable. warten auf is "wait for" — but the auf is not "on". You learn the pair, or you guess wrong every time.

Store three things together: the verb, the preposition, and the case. sich beziehen auf + Akkusativ. Not two things — three.

auf + AkkusativMeaning
sich beziehen aufto refer to
reagieren aufto react to
hinweisen aufto point out
verzichten aufto do without, to give up
über + AkkusativMeaning
verfügen überto have at your disposal
sich beschweren überto complain about
diskutieren überto discuss
von + DativMeaning
abhängen vonto depend on
ausgehen vonto assume
sprechen vonto speak of
mit + DativMeaning
sich beschäftigen mitto occupy yourself with
rechnen mitto expect, to count on
umgehen mitto deal with, to handle
an + Akk / DatMeaning
denken an + Akkto think of
sich erinnern an + Akkto remember
teilnehmen an + Datto take part in
leiden an + Datto suffer from (an illness)
für + AkkusativMeaning
sich entscheiden fürto decide on
sorgen fürto see to, to provide for
sich eignen fürto be suitable for

Two mechanics make these verbs usable rather than just recognisable. A thing is replaced by a da-compound, never by a pronoun; a question about a thing uses a wo-compound. People keep their pronouns.

  • Worauf bezieht sich der Artikel?

What does the article refer to?

wo + r + auf, because auf starts with a vowel

  • Er bezieht sich darauf.

    He is referring to that.

  • Davon hängt viel ab.

    A lot depends on that.

a da-compound can open the sentence

  • Womit beschäftigst du dich?

    What are you working on?

  • Auf wen wartest du?

    Who are you waiting for?

a person keeps the preposition + wen — never "worauf"

Ich freue mich auf es.Ich freue mich darauf.

A thing after a fixed preposition becomes a da-compound. "auf es" is one of the most recognisable learner mistakes in German.
