Lesson 10 · Holding a long text together

Advanced cohesion across paragraphs

Picking up what came before, signalling where a text is going, and not over-signposting.

Not started

A long German text is held together less by connectives between sentences than by moves between blocks: gathering up what has been said, turning against it, drawing an interim conclusion, announcing what comes next. Each of these has its own expressions, and they are not interchangeable.

ExpressionThe move it makes
vor diesem Hintergrundgathers up the previous block as a background
in diesem Zusammenhangstays inside the topic just opened
diesbezüglichrefers back to one named matter (formal)
daraus ergibt sichdraws a consequence from what precedes
dem steht gegenübersets a counterweight against the whole block
hinzu kommtadds an item of the same kind
zugleicha simultaneous, partly opposed aspect
insofernin that respect — a bounded conclusion
dennochconcession: despite all of the above
dementsprechendaccordingly — a consequence in the same direction
nicht zuletzta final point, marked as important
im weiteren Verlaufannouncing what the text will do next
zusammenfassendsumming up, once, at the end
  • Vor diesem Hintergrund erscheint die Debatte um Anwesenheitspflicht falsch geführt.

Against this background, the debate about compulsory attendance looks misconceived.

gathers several preceding paragraphs into one premise

  • Daraus ergibt sich ein unbequemer Befund für die Hochschulen.

From this follows an uncomfortable finding for the universities.

  • Dem steht die Betreuungsrelation gegenüber, die sich nicht verändert hat.

Against this stands the staff-to-student ratio, which has not changed.

gegenüberstehen is separable, and dem is dative — the thing being weighed against

  • Insofern ist die Kritik berechtigt, als sie die Reihenfolge betrifft.

The criticism is justified in that it concerns the sequencing.

Reference chains are what make pointers work. dieser Befund, diese Entwicklung, dieser Umstand, jene Gruppe — a demonstrative plus a summarising noun lets you pick up a whole argument in two words. Choose the noun carefully: it tells the reader what kind of thing you think the previous passage was.

  • Dieser Befund ist in zwei Untersuchungen bestätigt worden.

This finding has been confirmed in two studies.

calling it a Befund claims it is established

  • Diese Deutung ist nicht die einzige mögliche.

This interpretation is not the only possible one.

calling it a Deutung claims it is one reading among several

  • Dieser Umstand erklärt die Zurückhaltung der Betriebe.

This circumstance explains the reticence of the firms.

Do not put a connective at the start of every sentence. Inside a paragraph, most sentences should connect through content — old information in position 1 — and only the genuine turns need a marker. Over-signposted prose reads as anxious.

Die Kosten steigen. Daher ist die Reform teuer. Außerdem ist sie umstritten. Dennoch wird sie umgesetzt. Folglich wächst der Widerstand.Die Kosten steigen, und mit ihnen der Widerstand gegen die Reform. Umgesetzt wird sie dennoch.

Four connectives in five short sentences. The rewrite keeps the one turn that matters (dennoch) and lets the rest connect through content.

Zusammenfassend ist zu sagen, dass … (im dritten von acht Absätzen)Zusammenfassend ist zu sagen, dass … (im letzten Absatz)

zusammenfassend is used once, at the end. Using it mid-text tells the reader the argument is over when it is not.

One frequent confusion worth fixing: insofern bounds a claim ("in that respect"), while insofern als introduces the clause that states the respect. Insofern ist die Kritik berechtigt refers back; Die Kritik ist berechtigt, insofern als sie die Kosten betrifft names the boundary in the same sentence.
