Lesson 11 · Words that are not synonyms

Lexical precision and near-synonyms

Choosing between words a dictionary lists together, in four fields where the choice changes the claim.

Not started

At C1 the typical mistake is no longer grammatical. It is choosing a word that is almost right and thereby saying something you did not mean — most often about how certain a source was, what caused what, or how you judge something.

For every near-synonym, ask four questions: how strong is it, what stance does it carry, which register does it belong to, and what grammatical frame does it need. Two words with the same translation rarely share all four.

Reporting verbs. This field matters most, because the choice reports on the source as well as the content.

VerbWhat it says about the claim
sagenneutral, unmarked — often too vague in writing
feststellenrecords something established; neutral and firm
erklärenstates officially, or explains
erläuternsets out in detail, with reasons
betonenemphasises — the source thinks this matters
hervorhebensingles out from other points
behauptenasserts without backing — sceptical
einräumenconcedes something unhelpful to its own case
zugebenadmits, with a whiff of fault
bestreitendisputes, denies
vermutensuspects, surmises — explicitly uncertain
  • Die Autorin stellt fest, dass die Abstände bestehen bleiben.

The author notes that the gaps persist.

    a finding, reported neutrally

  • Die Autorin behauptet, dass die Abstände bestehen bleiben.

The author claims that the gaps persist.

the same content — but now you have called it unsupported

  • Die Autorin räumt ein, dass die Zuweisung nicht randomisiert war.

The author concedes that assignment was not randomised.

  • Die Autorin vermutet, dass der Effekt überschätzt wird.

The author suspects that the effect is overestimated.

she is guessing — use only where she says so

behaupten is an accusation. Applied to a documented finding it misreports the source as strongly as changing a number would.

Change. ändern and verändern are the pair that trips up most learners. ändern is a deliberate alteration of something specific — a date, a rule, a plan. verändern is a change in the nature of something, often gradual and often without an agent.

VerbUseExample
änderndeliberately alter a specific thingden Termin ändern
verändernchange the nature of somethingDie Arbeitswelt verändert sich.
anpassenadjust to fit something elsedie Fristen an den Plan anpassen
umstellenswitch a system overauf ein neues Verfahren umstellen
wandeln (sich)transform, formal or literaryDer Begriff hat sich gewandelt.
sich entwickelndevelop over timeDie Nachfrage entwickelt sich günstig.

Causation. German distinguishes how directly and how mechanically one thing brings about another.

auslösentriggers — sets off something already latentX löst Y aus
bewirkenbrings about an intended effectX bewirkt Y
führen zuleads to — the mildest, most commonX führt zu Y (Dat.)

one cause among several — the honest choice when you cannot isolate one

Evaluation. These adjectives are not degrees of "good". Each judges by a different standard: sinnvoll by purpose, zweckmäßig by practicality, angemessen by proportion, geeignet by fitness for a task, wirksam by effect, effizient by cost of that effect.

AdjectiveJudged by
sinnvollwhether it makes sense at all
zweckmäßigwhether it is practical for the purpose
angemessenwhether it is proportionate
geeignetwhether it fits this particular task
wirksamwhether it produces the effect
effizientwhether the effect is worth the resources

Die Maßnahme ist effizient, aber sie wirkt nicht.Die Maßnahme ist wirksam, aber nicht effizient.

effizient presupposes an effect — it is about the ratio of effect to cost. Something that does not work cannot be efficient.

Wir müssen die Arbeitswelt ändern.Die Arbeitswelt verändert sich. / Wir müssen die Regeln ändern.

ändern needs a specific object you can alter. For a whole domain shifting in character, German uses verändern, usually reflexively.
