Lesson 2 · Unpacking dense written German

Dense participial attributes and apposition

Reading noun phrases with several modifiers stacked inside them, and unpacking them without changing the meaning.

Not started

The single hardest thing about formal German is not vocabulary; it is that a noun phrase can swallow a whole clause. You already know the pattern from B2. What changes at C1 is scale: several modifiers at once, and a head noun a long way from the article that announced it.

Reading procedure: find the article, jump to the noun it agrees with, read that pair first. Only then go back and read what sits in between.

  • die von der Bundesregierung im vergangenen Jahr beschlossenen Maßnahmen

the measures adopted by the federal government last year

die … Maßnahmen is the frame; everything else describes them

  • die Maßnahmen, die die Bundesregierung im vergangenen Jahr beschlossen hat

the measures that the federal government adopted last year

the same content, unpacked into a relative clause

  • die seit Jahren kontrovers diskutierte Reform

the reform that has been debated controversially for years

→ die Reform, die seit Jahren kontrovers diskutiert wird

  • die unter erheblichem Zeitdruck entwickelte Lösung

the solution developed under considerable time pressure

→ die Lösung, die unter erheblichem Zeitdruck entwickelt wurde

Unpacking is mechanical once you see the parts. The participle becomes the verb of the relative clause. Partizip II unpacks into a passive (wurde beschlossen) or a perfect (hat beschlossen), Partizip I into an active present (steigen). Everything between the article and the participle keeps its place inside the new clause.

PackedUnpackedWhat the participle became
die im Bericht genannten Zahlendie Zahlen, die im Bericht genannt werdenPartizip II → passive
die seit Jahren steigenden Mietendie Mieten, die seit Jahren steigenPartizip I → active
die von mehreren Städten beauftragte Untersuchungdie Untersuchung, die mehrere Städte beauftragt habenvon-phrase → subject of the clause
ein kaum zu überschätzender Faktorein Faktor, der kaum überschätzt werden kannzu + Partizip I → can/must be done

zu + Partizip I (ein kaum zu überschätzender Faktor, die zu erwartenden Kosten) is not a normal participle. It means can be or must be done — passive plus possibility or obligation.

The second density device is apposition: a noun phrase set beside another, between commas, renaming it. It carries no verb at all, which is exactly why journalism loves it — a whole identification for the price of two commas.

  • Frau Keller, Leiterin der Forschungsabteilung, erklärte den Befund.

Ms Keller, head of the research department, explained the finding.

no article before the job title in an apposition

  • Berlin, die größte Stadt Deutschlands, wächst weiter.

Berlin, the largest city in Germany, continues to grow.

  • Die Mietpreisbremse, ein 2015 eingeführtes Instrument, wirkt nur im Bestand.

The rent cap, an instrument introduced in 2015, works only in existing tenancies.

an apposition that itself contains a participial attribute

An apposition takes the case of the noun it stands beside: mit Frau Keller, der Leiterin der Abteilung — dative outside, dative inside.

Knowing what a modifier belongs to matters as much as unpacking it. In die von der Stadt im Frühjahr vorgelegten Pläne für den Ausbau des Radwegenetzes, the phrase für den Ausbau modifies Pläne, not Frühjahr — the head noun collects everything.

die Frau, die ich gesehen habe → die von mir gesehene Frau (in speech)die Frau, die ich gesehen habe

Compression is possible here grammatically, but no one talks like that. Compress only where the result is something a German writer would actually publish — typically an official or academic text, not a conversation.

die von der Stadt gebaut Radwegedie von der Stadt gebauten Radwege

The participle is an adjective inside the phrase and agrees with the head noun at the end — never with anything inside the phrase.
