Lesson 9 · Writing with nobody in the sentence

Impersonal and academic distance

The es-frames of formal German: what each one claims, and when the personal version is better.

Not started

Academic German removes the writer from the foreground almost completely. Not out of modesty: an impersonal claim invites the reader to check the reasoning rather than to weigh the author’s authority. Learning the frames is quick; knowing what each one commits you to is the actual skill.

FrameWhat it claims
Es lässt sich feststellen, dass …this can be established — fairly strong
Es zeigt sich, dass …the material shows it, without a source named
Es ist davon auszugehen, dass …we should work on this assumption
Es kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass …the same, one degree more cautious
Dabei ist zu beachten, dass …a qualification the reader must carry forward
Zu berücksichtigen ist, dass …a factor that has to enter the judgement
Es stellt sich die Frage, ob …opening a question the text will treat
Es bleibt offen, ob …declining to answer it

It can be established that the differences between classes are greater than those between schools.

It is to be assumed that the effect is overestimated.

sein + zu + Infinitiv: an assumption the text will work with

It should be noted here that assignment was not randomised.

The question arises whether the results are transferable.

The es in these frames is a placeholder, not a subject with meaning, and it disappears as soon as something else takes position 1: Es zeigt sich, dass … but Bei genauerer Betrachtung zeigt sich, dass ….

It emerges that the differences persist.

On closer examination it emerges that the differences persist.

the es is gone — position 1 is taken

It must be taken into account that the sample was small.

the zu-infinitive itself in position 1, verb second

Four ways to say the same thing, at four distances: Ich nehme an, dass … (personal), Man kann annehmen, dass … (generalised), Es ist anzunehmen, dass … (impersonal), Es ist davon auszugehen, dass … (impersonal and institutional). A report uses the last two; a discussion often works better with the first.

Impersonal style buys neutrality and costs responsibility. Where the reader needs to know who thinks or does something — a recommendation you are making, a mistake you are owning — the personal version is not less professional, it is more honest.

  • Es wird empfohlen, den Parallelbetrieb zu begrenzen.

It is recommended that the parallel operation be limited.

nobody is recommending anything — fine in a formal report, evasive in an email

  • Wir empfehlen, den Parallelbetrieb zu begrenzen.

We recommend limiting the parallel operation.

    a recommendation someone stands behind

  • Es sind Fehler aufgetreten.

    Errors occurred.

the classic evasion: no agent at all

  • Wir haben zwei Fehler gemacht.

    We made two mistakes.

Impersonal frames already carry caution. Stacking hedges inside them produces a sentence that commits to nothing at all.

Nesting two of them is the commonest way learners produce unreadable academic German.
