Lesson 10 · Writing about what you have read

Analytical writing and synthesis

Summarising a source fairly, combining several, and then arguing — in that order.

Not started

An analytical C1 text has a shape, and the shape is worth learning as a shape: issue → source positions → comparison → evaluation → your position → conclusion. Most weak versions of this task go wrong by starting at step five.

Summary and opinion are separate sections, not separate sentences. Once the reader cannot tell which is which, the whole text loses its authority — including the parts that were fair.

Attribution verbs are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one misreports the source. feststellen records a finding, betonen emphasises, einräumen concedes something unhelpful to its own case, behaupten asserts without backing — and using behaupten for a well-evidenced claim is an accusation, not a summary.

The author records that the vocabulary gaps persist.

    neutral: a finding

The author concedes that assignment was not randomised.

a point that weakens his own case

The author claims that the costs are overestimated.

signals: asserted without evidence. Use only when you mean it

The author emphasises that the order of the measures is decisive.

A neutral paraphrase keeps three things from the original: the claim, its scope ("nur bei kurzen Programmen"), and its strength ("dürfte", "legt nahe"). Changing any of the three is a distortion, even when the result reads better.

Original: the results suggest the effect was overestimated.

Distorted: the study proves the effect was overestimated.

nahelegen became beweisen — the strength was changed

Neutral: the study suggests the effect was overestimated.

Your own position, when the task asks for one, comes after the sources and is marked as yours: Meiner Einschätzung nach, Überzeugender erscheint mir, Gegen diese Lesart spricht. It is also allowed to be a limited position — at C1, "both are right about different things" is a perfectly respectable conclusion if you say which things.

zu Recht is your verdict, smuggled into the summary. Keep it for the evaluation section, where the reader expects it.

A figure is not an opinion. Attributing data with a Meinung phrase makes evidence sound like a preference.
