Writing II · Analytical synthesis

Analytical synthesis writing

Writing from several sources at length, and qualifying your own conclusion.

Not started

The full analytical structure has seven moves, and the order is not decorative: everything before move five earns you the right to make move five.

#MoveTypical opener
1introduce the issueZur Diskussion steht die Frage, ob …

Move 4 is what distinguishes C1 from B2. Not "who is right" but "how good is what each side is standing on" — a study, a figure, a case, an assertion. A text that skips it has opinions instead of an argument.

What is robust above all is the finding on dispersion; the claim about method effects, by contrast, rests on a comparison of approaches that were similar anyway.

The figures support the weaker claim, not the stronger one.

The second reading seems more convincing to me, though only provided the staffing ratio stays unchanged.

position and its condition in one sentence

A qualified position is stronger than an unqualified one. Dies gilt, sofern … tells the reader under what circumstances you would change your mind, which is the difference between a conclusion and an allegiance.

Repairing a biased summary is a skill worth practising separately, because the bias is usually carried by small words: an evaluative adjective, a reporting verb, a zu Recht, a dropped qualifier. Remove those and the same sentence becomes usable.

BiasedRepaired

"realistischer" is a verdict dressed as a reason. A reason names something in the source that the other source lacks.

A conclusion has to say something. "Both make good points" is what a text writes when it has not done move 3.
