Clock time and days
Wie spät ist es? — plus um, am and im.
Asking is easy and there are two ways: Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es? Both mean what time is it.
Wie spät ist es?
What time is it?
Es ist acht Uhr.
It is eight o’clock.
Es ist halb neun.
It is half past eight.
careful — see below
Es ist Viertel nach acht.
It is quarter past eight.
Es ist Viertel vor neun.
It is quarter to nine.
halb neun is half past EIGHT. German counts forward to the coming hour, not back from the last one.
This one genuinely catches people out and makes them late. halb acht = 7:30. If in doubt, the digital form is always safe: Es ist sieben Uhr dreißig.
To say at a time, use um. To say on a day, use am. For months and seasons, use im.
| preposition | used for | example |
|---|---|---|
| um | clock times | um acht Uhr |
| am | days, parts of the day | am Montag, am Abend |
| im | months, seasons | im September, im Sommer |
| — | heute, morgen, gestern | Ich arbeite morgen. |
Ich arbeite am Montag.
I work on Monday.
Der Zug fährt um 8 Uhr.
The train leaves at 8.
Ich fliege im September nach Deutschland.
I am flying to Germany in September.
Die Besprechung fängt um halb zehn an.
The meeting starts at half past nine.
The days, all masculine, all taking am: Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag, Sonntag.
Parts of the day come in two flavours. With am they name a specific occasion (am Morgen); as bare adverbs ending in -s they mean generally, habitually: morgens, mittags, nachmittags, abends, nachts.
Ich trinke morgens Kaffee.
I drink coffee in the mornings.
habit
Abends sehe ich fern.
In the evenings I watch TV.
Am Montag habe ich eine Besprechung.
On Monday I have a meeting.
Ich arbeite in Montag.Ich arbeite am Montag.
Days always take am — it is a contraction of an dem, which is why it looks nothing like English "on".
