Talking about the future
werden + infinitive — and why you often do not need it.
First, the good news: for plans with a time word, German just uses the present tense. Morgen arbeite ich. — I am working tomorrow. This is what you will say most of the time.
When you want to be explicit — a prediction, a promise, an intention — use werden + infinitive. It behaves exactly like the Perfekt: the conjugated bit second, the other verb last.
| werden | |
|---|---|
| ich | werde |
| du | wirst |
| er/sie/es | wird |
| wir | werden |
| ihr | werdet |
| sie/Sie | werden |
Ich werde morgen arbeiten.
I will work tomorrow.
Wir werden Deutsch lernen.
We will learn German.
Morgen arbeite ich.
I am working tomorrow.
present tense — perfectly normal
Ich werde morgen arbeite.Ich werde morgen arbeiten.
The second verb stays in the infinitive. Only werden is conjugated.
