Hallo und tschüss
Greeting, saying goodbye, and answering "Wie geht es dir?".
German greets by time of day. Guten Morgen until about ten, Guten Tag through the day, Guten Abend from the evening. Hallo works at any hour with anyone you are not being formal with.
| When | Neutral / formal | Informal |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Guten Morgen | Morgen! / Hallo |
| Daytime | Guten Tag | Hallo |
| Evening | Guten Abend | Hallo / Hi |
| Leaving | Auf Wiedersehen | Tschüss |
| Night | Gute Nacht | Nacht! |
Tschüss to a friend, Auf Wiedersehen to an official, a doctor, a shop assistant you do not know. Getting this wrong is never rude, only noticeable.
The standard exchange has two forms, and they differ only in the pronoun: Wie geht es dir? to someone you call du, Wie geht es Ihnen? to someone you call Sie. In speech you will hear the short Wie geht’s?
Wie geht es dir?
How are you?
to a friend
Wie geht es Ihnen?
How are you?
to a stranger, formally
Danke, gut. Und dir?
Fine, thanks. And you?
Es geht.
So-so.
honest and very common
Nicht so gut.
Not so good.
Wie geht es Sie?Wie geht es Ihnen?
The formal pronoun here is Ihnen, not Sie. Same for dir, not du.
