Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee
hätte · wäre · würde · könnte · möchte — requests, wishes and preferences.
You have been using this since Lesson 2 without being told what it was. Ich möchte einen Kaffee was presented as a fixed phrase. It is not — it is the Konjunktiv II of mögen, and it belongs to a small family of forms that make German polite.
And you met the raw material last lesson. The Konjunktiv II of these verbs is the Präteritum plus an umlaut: hatte → hätte, war → wäre, konnte → könnte. One dot changes a statement about the past into a polite present.
| Verb | Präteritum | Konjunktiv II | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| haben | hatte | hätte | Ich hätte gern … — I would like |
| sein | war | wäre | Das wäre gut. — that would be |
| können | konnte | könnte | Könnten Sie …? — could you |
| mögen | — | möchte | Ich möchte … — I would like |
| werden | — | würde | Ich würde gern … — I would |
hätte, wäre, könnte, möchte and würde behave like modals: they take position 2, and any infinitive goes to the end.
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
I would like a coffee.
the standard way to order anything
Könnten Sie mir helfen?
Could you help me?
helfen takes the dative: mir
Ich würde gern nach Deutschland fahren.
I would like to travel to Germany.
Das wäre besser.
That would be better.
Ich möchte einen Termin machen.
I would like to make an appointment.
Two of them overlap, and learners always ask. hätte gern goes with a thing: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. würde gern goes with an activity: Ich würde gern schwimmen gehen. If there is a verb, use würde.
hätte gern + noun. würde gern + infinitive. möchte does both.
Ich hätte gern ein Bier.
I would like a beer.
a thing
Ich würde gern ein Bier trinken.
I would like to drink a beer.
an activity → würde + infinitive
Ich möchte ein Bier.
I would like a beer.
möchte covers both, and is always safe
Why bother, when Ich will einen Kaffee is understandable? Because it lands like I want a coffee barked at a waiter. The Konjunktiv is not decoration in German — it is the difference between asking and demanding.
Ich will einen Termin.
I want an appointment.
blunt, almost rude
Ich möchte einen Termin.
I would like an appointment.
normal and polite
Kannst du mir helfen?
Can you help me?
fine among friends
Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
Could you please help me?
what you say to a stranger or an official
The full endings follow the Präteritum pattern you already know — ich hätte, du hättest, er hätte, wir hätten, Sie hätten — so ich and er/sie/es are identical again. For Sie forms, remember the -n: Könnten Sie, Hätten Sie, Wären Sie.
One more everyday use: wäre for a soft opinion or suggestion. Das wäre super. Freitag wäre besser. It says the same thing as ist but leaves the other person room to disagree.
Ich hätte gern nach Berlin fahren.Ich würde gern nach Berlin fahren.
With an activity you need würde. hätte gern only takes a noun.
Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen mir?Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
helfen takes one dative object. The infinitive goes to the end on its own.
