Lesson 1 · Foundations

Present tense

Regular endings, the verbs you already use, and the ones that misbehave.

Not started

Take the infinitive, drop -en, add the ending. That is the whole system for regular verbs.

endingspielenwohnen
ich-espielewohne
du-stspielstwohnst
er/sie/es-tspieltwohnt
wir-enspielenwohnen
ihr-tspieltwohnt
sie/Sie-enspielenwohnen

Two adjustments. Stems ending in -t or -d add an e so the word stays pronounceable: du arbeitest, er arbeitet. Stems ending in -s / -ß / -z drop the s of -st: du heißt, not du heißst.

The two you cannot avoid are irregular, so learn them as words rather than as patterns:

sein (to be)haben (to have)
ichbinhabe
dubisthast
er/sie/esisthat
wirsindhaben
ihrseidhabt
sie/Siesindhaben

Some verbs change their stem vowel, but only in du and er/sie/es. The wir/ihr/sie forms stay regular.

  • Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch.

    I speak a little German.

  • Er spricht sehr schnell.

    He speaks very fast.

  • Sie fährt mit dem Auto.

    She goes by car.

  • Wir lernen Deutsch.

    We are learning German.

Ich bin arbeiten.Ich arbeite.

German has no continuous tense. "Ich arbeite" covers both I work and I am working — there is nothing to add.
